I was offered the Kindle app from Amazon for my desktop and immediately asked for "Zone Policeman 88", published in 1913, an eBook offered FREE. I'm now 87 and read it a very long time ago as a youngster, so I didn't remember anything about it.. It's fascinating and also funny!Product details

Zone Policeman 88; a close range study of the Panama canal and its workers edition by Harry Alverson Franck Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I spent a few years in Panama and this book is a great way to learn about the area. He sees the Canal with a good eye at what was going to lost after the Canal was finished. The villages and farms that were flooded by Gatun Lake. Fun read and good way to see the difference between the Zone and Panama.
This book is a classic written by a Canal Zone policeman about the canal and its workers.
It was widely read and quoted. It provided insight of how Zonians lived in the early days of the canal and some consulted it before seeking employment there.
His police badge was 88 and thus its inclusion in the title. He was a keen observer and had an easy to read journalist style. He traveled through out the Caribbean and collected and published his impressions as well.
Read this while on cruise going thru canel. Must have been hard times building it without power. The new one is going to use tug boats replacing trains we were pulled by.
A humorous glimpse of an oft forgotten event in our nation's history told from the perspective of someone who lived it!
Yes, the language and ethnic references are not for the easily offended. But , they truly evoke the time & place in an indelible manner.
It is a very quick and most enjoyable trip to the earliest days of the "Zone"!!!
If you want to know what it was like to be a policeman living in the Canal Zone during the construction days, this is the book. I felt as if I was there. Great story!
